Windsurfing Shortboards

These day shortboards are designed for the primarily used in planing mode, where the board is sliding over the surface of the water rather than cutting through, and displacing the water. Planing
offers greater speeds and more maneuverability, but requires various techniques from the displacing mode.

Experience windsurfers will not even consider sailing if the wind is not enough to plane. The ideal wind speed of 12 knots is required for adequate planing on all short board. The main aim of planing at lower winds had driven manufactures to develop and spread of wider and shorter boards, which can plane at wind speeds as low as 8 knots.
